Best Hotels in Penang

Colonial shophouse street, Georgetown, Penang boutique hotel

Penang’s best hotels split cleanly between two zones: the UNESCO heritage core of George Town, where boutique and heritage properties dominate, and the northern beach coast at Batu Ferringhi, where large resort hotels line the seafront. For most visitors, George Town is the right base — the food, street art, temples, and hawker culture are all within walking distance, and the island’s character is concentrated there.

George Town — Heritage and Boutique Hotels

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (The Blue Mansion) is the most distinctive hotel in Penang. The 1880s indigo-painted mansion operates 16 rooms within the heritage building itself — rooms are large, furnished with period pieces, and the property is as much a museum as a hotel. Rates run RM450–900 per night depending on room size and season. Book well ahead for Chinese New Year and school holiday periods — it fills months out.

Eastern and Oriental Hotel is a colonial waterfront landmark that opened in 1885 and has hosted guests from Somerset Maugham to Rudyard Kipling. The heritage wing rooms are the ones worth booking. Rates run RM600–1,500 — the top of the Penang market, with service and architecture to justify it for one or two special nights.

Campbell House on Jalan Campbell is a restored 1930s Straits Chinese townhouse with 10 individually designed rooms. The ground-floor lounge and breakfast service are both good. The location — five minutes from Khoo Kongsi and Fort Cornwallis — is excellent. Rates run RM350–650.

23 Love Lane is a boutique guesthouse on Jalan Cinta with 15 rooms around a colonial courtyard. Less formal than Campbell House, with a loyal returning clientele. Rates run RM200–420 depending on room size.

The Edison George Town is the most polished large-boutique option in the heritage area — 56 rooms in a restored building, consistent service, and good in-house dining. Rates run RM350–600.

For budget accommodation in George Town: Pin Hotel on Lebuh Chulia (RM60–120 private room), Ryokan Penang (Japanese-style capsule and private rooms, RM70–150), and Hutton Lodge on Jalan Hutton (RM80–160 with air conditioning and a small garden) are all solid options within the heritage zone.

Gurney Drive / Gurney Paragon

Gurney Drive is 4 km north of the heritage core. Gurney Resort Hotel and Residences is the main option here (RM200–400) — large rooms, waterfront access, and good transit connections into George Town by Grab. Better suited to families who want space over heritage character.

Batu Ferringhi — Beach Resorts

Batu Ferringhi is Penang’s beach strip, 17 km north of George Town. The hotels here are resort-scale and the beach is functional rather than exceptional.

Lone Pine Hotel is the original boutique hotel on Batu Ferringhi, open since 1948. The stretch of beach in front is quieter than the commercial central strip. Rates run RM350–700. Hard Rock Hotel Penang is the best-known international brand here — pool, beach, reliable service (RM280–600). Holiday Inn Resort Penang caters well to families with children at RM250–500.

Which Zone to Choose

George Town is the right base for first-time visitors and anyone who came to Penang for the food and heritage. Batu Ferringhi makes sense only if a dedicated beach holiday is the goal — and if so, be aware that Langkawi and the Perhentians offer better beaches. The eastern and oriental character of George Town is what distinguishes Penang from every other Malaysian city; staying inside it makes that accessible without relying on transport.
