Penang International Food Festival 2026

The Penang International Food Festival (PIFF) runs throughout October, using the island’s status as a globally recognised food destination to anchor a month of events centred on Georgetown’s hawker culture and culinary heritage. Penang’s food scene - char kway teow, assam laksa, cendol, nasi kandar - was recognised by UNESCO in 2013 as part of the intangible cultural heritage of the Penang George Town heritage zone.

Events span the full month and include hawker trail walks through Georgetown’s back lanes, charity dinners pairing local hawkers with restaurant chefs, Penang-style cooking demonstrations, baking competitions, and special menus at heritage hotels like the Eastern & Oriental. The core hawker heritage trails around Gurney Drive, Chulia Street, and New Lane are the main gathering points for evening food events.

Most events are free or low-cost. The formal dinners and classes run RM80–200 per person. Exact programming and dates are announced by the Penang Tourism Authority, typically in August, at mypenang.gov.my. Penang is easily reached from Kuala Lumpur by bus (4.5–5 hours, RM35–45) or flight (1 hour, RM60–150 with AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines).

For first-time visitors, a few dishes are worth making a priority during festival month. Penang assam laksa - a sour tamarind-based fish broth unlike anything served elsewhere in Malaysia - is most reliably found at Air Itam market and along Jalan Burma. Char kway teow cooked over charcoal at the original roadside stalls on Lorong Selamat is another benchmark. Nasi kandar at Line Clear on Penang Road is open 24 hours and draws a permanent queue.

Georgetown’s Chulia Street and nearby Armenian Street are the most convenient base for festival events - accommodation along this corridor ranges from heritage guesthouses at RM80–150 per night to boutique hotels at RM250–450. October falls outside the peak holiday period in Penang, so rooms are available but can tighten during specific festival weekend events. Booking a week or two in advance is generally sufficient.
