Where to Stay in the Perhentian Islands
Accommodation on the Perhentian Islands divides along geographic lines. Which island and which beach you choose determines the character of your stay more than the specific property. The islands have no chain hotels, no international booking platforms with full coverage, and no branded resorts in the mainstream sense. Most properties are small family-run guesthouses or simple beach chalets booked either directly or through local operators. Booking directly with the guesthouses is standard practice and typically more reliable than third-party sites.
Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil
Long Beach is the most popular base on the islands. It is a 600-metre stretch of white sand on the east-facing side of Kecil with the highest density of guesthouses, restaurants, and dive operators. The beach is genuinely attractive, though east-facing swells can make it choppy during some weather windows. If you want company, beach bar evenings, and easy access to dive operators, Long Beach is the practical choice.
Price range: RM60–200 per night for a standard room with fan or air conditioning. Budget end is a basic fan chalet with shared bathroom; RM150–200 gets you air conditioning, a private bathroom, and a sea-facing room at most properties. Matahari Chalet, Mohsin Chalet, and Shari-La Island Resort are among the established names, though the guesthouse landscape changes between seasons. Book direct by email or WhatsApp — most Long Beach properties have some social media presence.
Coral Bay, Perhentian Kecil
Coral Bay faces west on the opposite side of Kecil, which means calmer water (better for swimming and entry-level snorkelling directly from the beach) and sunsets rather than sunrises. It is quieter than Long Beach — fewer restaurants, no beach bar scene — and suits travellers who want relaxed evenings and easier water access.
Price range: RM80–250 per night. A few established guesthouses and small resorts operate here, including Alunan Resort and Maya’s Little Hideaway. Like Long Beach, booking direct is the norm. The walk between Coral Bay and Long Beach takes 20–30 minutes through the jungle trail, making day trips between the two easy.
Perhentian Besar
Besar is quieter overall. The main accommodation options are resort-style properties with packages that typically include meals and boat transfers. The atmosphere skews toward couples and families rather than backpackers or solo travellers.
Tuna Bay Island Resort and Coral View Island Resort are the principal mid-range options, with rooms and chalets ranging from RM200–500 per night including meals. Both have direct beach access and snorkelling equipment available for guests. The marine life on Besar’s western side — particularly at Turtle Beach — is the main draw for basing here.
Standalone budget accommodation on Besar is limited. A few basic chalets exist outside the main resorts but availability is inconsistent — confirm directly before planning around them.
Booking Advice
Most Perhentian accommodation is not reliably listed on Booking.com or Agoda. The coverage that exists is incomplete and often out of date. The practical approach is to:
- Contact properties directly by WhatsApp or email (most have Instagram pages)
- Use Malaysian travel forums and community groups (Perhentian-specific Facebook groups are active)
- Book through a licensed dive operator if you are combining accommodation with a dive course — they often have direct arrangements with guesthouses
June, July, and August require booking at least 3 months in advance. May and September are more available with less advance notice required.
No ATMs exist on the islands. Arrive with enough ringgit for your full stay, including meals and water activities. Most guesthouses accept cash only.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Should I stay on Perhentian Kecil or Besar?
- Kecil (specifically Long Beach) is the backpacker hub with dive operators, beach bars, and the most guesthouse options. Besar is quieter and better suited to couples or families wanting a more resort-style experience. Besar accommodation typically includes meals; Kecil does not.
- Is budget accommodation available on the Perhentian Islands?
- Yes, on Kecil. Long Beach has fan chalets from RM60 per night and is the main budget area. Coral Bay is slightly more expensive. Besar has limited standalone budget options — most of its accommodation comes in meal-inclusive packages from RM200 per person per night.
- How far in advance do I need to book?
- June, July, and August require booking at least three months ahead. The properties most visitors want fill quickly and most do not take bookings via mainstream platforms. Contact guesthouses directly by WhatsApp or email — most have Instagram pages.
