Johor Bahru sits at the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, connected to Singapore by the Causeway - one of the busiest border crossings in the world. Danga Bay Waterfront - A redeveloped waterfront zone west of the city centre with modern high-rises, seafood restaurants, and a marina. About 15 minutes from JB Sentral by Grab. The best views of the Johor Strait and Singapore’s skyline. Several business hotels here.

Medini Iskandar (Iskandar Puteri) - A planned development zone 20km west of JB city. Legoland Malaysia, Pinewood Studios Iskandar Malaysia, and a cluster of international hotel brands are located here. Good for families visiting Legoland; inconvenient for JB city or Singapore crossings without a car.

Skudai and Setia Indah - Residential areas south of the city with budget accommodation and local food. Used by long-stay visitors but not recommended for tourists on short trips.

Getting to Johor Bahru From Singapore and KL

From Singapore - The CW2 bus from Queen Street terminal (Singapore side) runs across the Causeway to JB Sentral (approximately SGD 3.30 one-way, MYR 5-6 from JB side as of 2026). The KTM Shuttle Train between JB Sentral and Singapore Woodlands also operates. Grab works across the Causeway if you have a Malaysian Grab account; note that Singapore’s ride-hail apps do not operate in Malaysia. The Tuas Second Link (western crossing) is faster during peak periods but requires a car.

From Kuala Lumpur - Buses from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) take 3.5-4.5 hours and cost MYR 25-40. ETS trains from KL Sentral to JB Sentral take approximately 4.5-5 hours on the most direct service. AirAsia and Firefly operate short flights, though the bus is usually more practical given check-in time.

Food and What to Do

JB’s food scene is respected by Singaporeans who cross specifically to eat here - the prices are 30-50% lower and the hawker culture is genuine.
